Senior Ethan Pinkerton wrapped up his high school swimming career on Feb. 17 in Topeka, returning to Derby after competing in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

“This year our 200 relay finished in 17th; we were .04 seconds away from making finals,” Pinkerton said. “Our 400 relay made it to finals and took 15th overall.”

Finals at state are divided into A and B sections. In order to medal swimmers have to make it to the A finals, the round composed of the top eight swimmers. B finals consist of the next eight swimmers.

Junior Jacob Tanner and sophomore Jordan Weve swam the 100 meter butterfly. Tanner finished in 57.58 seconds, Weve in 57.85.

Making it to state is a memory cherished by all swimmers. It was bittersweet for Pinkerton.

“The whole experience is a ton of fun,” Pinkerton said. “Spending so much time with each other, it’s really amazing.”
