Fiction: Childhood fears shadow youth

Audrey Mullen, Yearbook staff writer

As a child I remember being scared of almost everything. The dark, being without my parents,

clowns, and just about anything else that was scary for a young kid.

One of my biggest fears was the man that followed me around. He was always in black, would move when I did, and chased me if I ran.

He was just as tall as I was at times, sometimes shorter or longer. No matter where I was so was he, unless it was dark out.

If I ever tried to talk to him he would walk away when I moved closer. It always weird because the brighter it was the more he was out.

I was really young when I really started to get scared of him. I think about 5 or 6. I didn’t know what to do, I tried to tell my parents about the man, but they made me go to a therapist.

I never understood that until my therapist told me who the strange man that always wore black and would disappear in the dark was.

He was my shadow.
