Locked doors bring security, distraction

Leah Khanu

The security and tardy policy requires classroom doors to be locked except during passing periods.

You’re in your desk. You’re safe. Everyone is working peacefully and quietly.

And then you hear that sound. The hollow rhythm that’s always present, like the blood in your ears or the beat of your heart.

Knock. Knock.

Your focus is broken. Your patience has gone. Everyone watched as you march to the door and turn the handle.

Someone came in from the office. They need John to see the counselors. He leaves.

You try to work. You try to regain the precious moments lost because of your quest to the door. But all too soon, you hear it again.

Knock. Knock.

John’s back. And not five minutes later you hear:

Knock. Knock.

Linda was late.

Knock. Knock.

Another bathroom break.

Knock. Knock.

Knock. Knock.

Knock. Knock.

It never stops. And it never will.

You’re in your desk. You’re safe.
