Students react to news of student with unloaded gun

After learning a student brought a gun to Derby High School for the second time since March, there was fear among some students.

“It makes me feel scared because these parents spend so much money for like the protection that we have here now. And now that there was a gun at the school, it makes me feel less protected,” Madelyn Rosenthal said.

The gun was unloaded, and according to principal Tim Hamblin, four minutes after the tip that a student had a weapon, the student was secured.

Throughout the day students talked about the incident in class and in the halls.

“I was a little relieved just because like, it was taken care of, but at the same time I didn’t know any of it was happening. Which would’ve been nice to be informed instead of after the fact.” Bryleigh Cross said.

During second block, Hamblin spoke on the intercom after handling the issue with the student.

“It makes me feel good that administration and (student resource officers) were all over it and nobody was harmed,” teacher Jessica Fuller said.

“… I think it was handled very well and handled appropriately.”

Fuller also felt relieved that a student was willing to come forward and tell someone about the gun in order for it to be handled.
