Eager for a win, the Derby boys basketball team travels to Salina to face the 2018 Class 5A runner-up Salina Central Mustangs.

The Panthers, who are 1-3, lost a heartbreaker 47-44 at Newton on Friday. They cooked up the right recipe to beat the Railers, holding Ty Berry, who has a slew of scholarship offers, to a quiet 16 points.

Early heroics from Damarius Peterson propelled the Railers to a 13-1 lead but thanks to a huge run by Clayton Hood, who had three three-pointers in the final minute of the second quarter, the Panthers were able to go up 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The struggles continued for the Panthers despite Hood’s 22 points.

The Panthers girls basketball team, which is 4-0 and rolling, defeated the previously 3-0 Newton Railers with ease. Led by Tore Alford and Kennedy Brown, the Panthers play 3-1 Salina Central.
