Journalism students recruiting future of DHS yearbook, newspaper

DHS journalism students — from the Panther’s Tale newspaper and yearbook classes — visited Derby North Middle School to recruit students for the 2019-2020 school year.

Both groups produce student-run content, which is based in and around Derby High School student life.

Speaking to incoming freshmen is a great way to get them involved.

“I think it was important because they may not seem as interested if they don’t know much about it, so if they know what it is and what it’s like, they’ll be more interested to join,” said sophomore Callie Knudson, who is in her first year of yearbook.

Expanding the journalism classes gives more students an opportunity to get involved, while also teaching valuable life lessons needed in the future.

“If you procrastinate in here, you’ll never get anything done. Just like in life,” senior Caitlyn Dunn said. “You learn to not procrastinate.”

Newspapers, yearbooks and pamphlets were provided to the eighth grade students to give them a feel for DHS journalism

The summer journalism camp taught by yearbook and newspaper staff members — and journalism adviser Joanna Chadwick — was also offered.

Both groups intend on recruiting at Derby Middle School as well in the upcoming week.
