Girls cross country continues to impress

The girls cross country team finished third at the Rim Rock race on Saturday in Lawrence. The Panthers competed in the Crimson division, which is the second of three.

Sophomore Vivian Kalb, who is the first Derby female runner to complete a 5k run under 20 minutes, set a new record when she went 19:49.9 on Saturday.

“It’s been my goal to get that time since I started running in high school,” Kalb said.

The first year for a 5k in cross country was 2015.

Right behind Kalb are teammates Abigail Monaghan and Ashlyn Struble. Both are running about 35-55 second behind Kalb.

“It’s a fun team sport and our goal is to make it to state,” sophomore Abigail Monaghan said. “And last year we were successful in doing that as a team on the girls side.”
