Outstanding senior in Journalism – Kendal Meyer

“I am very appreciative to have won the award and to know that my efforts have been noticed,” Meyer wrote in a text message. “I wouldn’t have been able to do what I do without my staffers around me, and I can’t wait to see what gets put out.”

KSHSAA Citizenship award – Kevin Washington and Heather Mills

“It feels amazing but it wasn’t easy,” Washington wrote in a Snapchat message. “It took character and responsibility, but I’m glad I’m able to put smiles on people’s faces and represent Derby, Kansas.”

Athlete of the Year – Sydney Nilles and Jacob Karsak

“I’ve been in debate since freshman year, and getting to participate as a senior and see how much I’ve not only grown as a debater but the people around me as well is amazing,” Hassel wrote in a Snapchat message.

“I am very honored,” Greb wrote in a text message. “I have worked hard in and out of class to get where I am today, but I also recognize that I could never have accomplished so much without the amazing teachers I have had along the way. They made sure I was both challenged and lived up to my potential. I cannot thank them enough.”

Outstanding senior in Band – Adam Schmidt

“It feels pretty good to be recognized by my directors, but it just shows how much of a personal connection that our directors at DHS have with each individual student,” Schmidt wrote in a Snapchat message. “They do their very best to be the best role models, and I have always strived to be just like them.”

“It feels pretty good,” Clinton wrote in a Snapchat message. “There are a lot of senior cadets in ROTC who are equally involved and that have also worked really hard all four years of high school. But to be recognized as the senior outstanding cadet really makes me feel like I accomplished something and made a difference.”
