Athletes Indoors By Trinity Kuntz

As the rain poured down after school on Monday, the normal stress of what to do for practice was gone.

Thanks to the new Activity Center.

“I don’t think many surrounding schools are as lucky to have such a large facility, where all sports are able to practice/workout,” said senior Kyla Hornback, who plays softball.

The Activity Center was finished in the fall. It has batting cages and a turf field, with mounds for softball.

It has primarily been used for P.E. and offseason spring workouts, including football, soccer, softball and baseball.

Spring sports have their own special issues with the weather. There could be snow or massive amounts of rain. They could be inside for a week, with all games postponed.

So with six spring sports — and dance team tryouts this week — finding space to practice was rough in years past.

But when the rain hit on Monday, the spring sports coaches knew they didn’t have to worry about who would be in one of the two gyms.

Dance team was in the main gym, track in the small gym, followed by boys tennis in the small gym, baseball and softball used the Activity Center.

“We were still able to practice because we had everything we needed in the facility, including cages and nets,” senior Jaedyn Igo said.

Junior varsity and varsity softball practiced together, while both C team and JV baseball practiced together. Varsity baseball practiced last, and everyone had about 90 minutes.

“It’s definitely 100 times better to practice in the facility rather than the wrestling room because we have tons of room in there, where we can get a lot of things done,” Hornback said.
