Orchestra trip to Kansas City

Orchestra had planned to attend a Kansas City Symphony concert featuring a world-renowned violinist (Midori).
However, the KC Symphony requires proof of vaccination in order to attend which is a problem for unvaccinated students. Instead the group will attend an opera produced by students and faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

“Broadening our musical horizons is the main reason for the trip,” instructor Wesley DeSpain said.

The first stop on the trip is KC Strings, a company that makes and sells string instruments. Students will get to see how instruments are made and ask questions.

“Music is connected to history as well,” DeSpain said.

So the group will visit the World War I museum — a museum on an old Arabian Steamboat — and see a presentation about Apollo 11 at Union Stations Planetarium.

There will also be some time for fun activities such as shopping and ax throwing.

“These fun activities help the group to bond. An orchestra actually plays better when they have a personal connection to one another,” DeSpain said.

“Im feeling very excited I haven’t been on a trip from the school for a long time. Covid(-19) messed up my eighth grade trip,” sophomore Juan Zamora said.
