This Wednesday, Derby High School will host its annual white coat ceremony.

Third year students of the biomedical pathway will receive their white coats.

“We decided to start this ceremony to honor how hard our students work. We deliberately wait until year three because only the serious students usually make it that far. The coats are a symbol of the work and commitment students have made to our program,” Kathleen O Brien said, who is a teacher in the biomedical pathway.

The ceremony will also include presentations from fourth year students’ capstone projects.

“The fourth year students in Biomedical Innovation, choose from an experiment of their design, a job shadowing project, or a community awareness project. They work on the project all year long, in addition to some additional classroom activities. The students then present their capstone project at our white coat ceremony,” O Brien said.

Past projects have included community awareness activities. One of which was a charity golf tournament to raise money and awareness for polycystic ovarian disease.
