Winter is here, and the Fashion Trends is sewing.

Penny Christensen is the fashion trends instructor. Throughout the year, she themes her classes around the seasons.

“I theme the fashion classes using colors of the seasons, but I have to consider the students’ ability to sew even more. The projects have to be simple and build on their skill levels,” Christensen said.

The students learn how to sew clothing and much more.

“In January, my classes will be sewing fleece ear muffs and matching neck cowls to keep warm. They will also be sewing flannel pajama pants,” Christensen said.

Trending winter clothing for teenagers consists of flannel pajama pants, Uggs and more.

“This year’s trends are scarves, hats, mittens, etc. Mostly fleece items that are soft yet warm,” Christensen said.

Christensen recommends recycling clothing to keep warm and fashionable.

“Shop at second-hand stores and try to upcycle clothing to stay warm yet fashionable. Also, learn some new skills like knitting or crocheting to create your own,” Christensen said.

With the rise of shopping at second-hand stores, creating clothing and accessories has a massive impact on the environment.

“Cheapest Up-cycling is very important right now, so redoing something you already have or using clothing that is too big and refitting it is quite popular,” Christensen said. “People are concerned with pollution, so they are trending toward recycling.”
