Girls cross country team won’t compete Saturday due to Covid

The girls cross country team will not be running at Newton on Saturday due to a positive case on the team. The boys will still run.

The decision came from the coaches, who thought it was the best decision for the team.

“I was looking forward to running this meet, but I feel like not being able to race could give us an advantage. I know the girls and I know how hard they work behind the scenes. This break gives us more time to recover,” sophomore Vryah Morgan said.

The runner who tested positive has not attended practice since Sept. 25 after exposure at a non-school related event.

Most of the girls on the team will have to quarantine until Oct. 12, according to the message from coach Jimmy Adams, who sent the message to the team around 11:30 a.m.

Athletic director Russell Baldwin noted in an email that this is not an official quarantine from the Sedgwick County Health Department or from Derby High.

“The good news is that once we all get back together, we will be focused and ready to crush the postseason,” Adams wrote in the message.
