Manis: 5 can’t-miss movies

From new to old, live action to animation, the combinations for a good film are endless – but sometimes those films are hard to come across. Whether you’re searching for new picks or looking for a way to procrastinate that one assignment, here are five films that are worth the watch.

Marriage Story – If you have a Netflix subscription, chances are that you’ve heard some buzz about Marriage Story. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, this film by Noah Baumbach focuses in on the failing marriage of an actress and her stage director husband. With a beautiful composition, the film easily draws viewers into the plot, taking the story into a different direction than expected.

The Stanford Prison Experiment It’s strange to see how fast humanity can disappear in the right (wrong) circumstances. Based on a controversial experiment that took place in 1971, The Stanford Prison Experiment follows a psychological study in which college students run a makeshift prison. Acting out the roles of guards and prisoners, the experiment starts to get out of hand. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s film is not only fascinating, but showcases impressive performances and is shot as if the viewer is watching the real life experience.

Dismissed How far would you go for a grade? Benjamin Arfmann’s film takes the pleading to the next level as honors student Lucas Ward (Dylan Sprouse) destroys everyone in his way of obtaining the perfect score. The thriller brings polished characters to the table, as well as picking up an intriguing and easily followed storyline.

Black Mirror: BandersnatchThere’s always that one film with the frustrating finish, leaving you to imagine yourself in the director’s chair, dictating the story’s ending. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a movie installment from the Netflix series Black Mirror, allows you the freedom to choose which path the movie follows. The film is set up to follow the actions of a young programmer, using the theme of a video game in the movie to allow the viewer to watch with different choices. Bandersnatch brings a new creative element to viewing films, and provides another possibility for future films.

Rebel Without A Cause Even if you’re simply an occasional movie watcher, it’s never a bad idea to observe new movies – or old ones. Going on its 55th anniversary, Rebel Without A Cause gives insight into the life of a teenager in the 50s. The film revolves around Jim Stark, portrayed by the late James Dean, and his struggles in a new town. As new bonds form, so do new troubles. Although the beginning of the film seems a bit slow, it soon progresses, growing into a movie worth watching.
