Panthers football (finally) preparing for home opener

The Panthers are two games in and finally will play their first home game on Friday.

The Panthers (1-1) play host to the Maize Eagles (2-0). Derby lost at Goddard 50-20 on Sept. 8, which ended the Panthers’ 24-game winning streak.

Sophomore Grant Adler played quarterback more against Goddard than the season opener at Eisenhower.

“It felt pretty good running with the team,” Adler said. “I didn’t get to play JV at all the week before, so it was nice to get some snaps, get my reads down. It helped a lot.”

Adler and junior Hunter Igo have been switching at the quarterback position through the season’s first two games.

“Right now we’re just still just switching off. This next game, I think, will really tell,” Adler said.

While both the quarterbacks are get time on the field, Adler wants to focus on his throwing and precision.

“Definitely with reads and just getting my throws down,” he said. “I’m more of a throwing quarterback, and I just really got to stand out with that to help with that part of our offense. (Receiver Michael Littleton) is definitely a star, and Jack (Taylor) is, too. I just need to get the ball to them.”

Derby has three straight home games, which could be a needed boost after the loss to Goddard.

“It will definitely be a whole lot better atmosphere. The Derby community definitely supports us — a lot more than I think the other schools around here — so it’s really nice to play in a home environment,” Adler said.
