The fifth-seeded Derby Panthers (9-1) edged fourth-seeded Manhattan Indians (8-2) 21-14 on Friday night in the second round of the Class 6A football playoffs.

The Panthers play at third-seeded Lawrence Free State Firebirds (10-0) on Nov. 10 in the quarterfinals.

Senior wide receiver Tyler Brown ran the ball in for his second touchdown against Manhattan.

While a little rain made its first appearance during a Panther football game in Manhattan, the Indians took a 7-0 lead.

There were many close plays, though.

Derby senior wide receiver Tyler Brown scored the Panthers’ first touchdown to tie the score at 7-all with a minute gone in the second quarter. Manhattan retook the lead with four minutes remaining in the half.

Junior Jackson Syring attempted a 47-yard field goal two minutes before halftime but came up short.

The Panthers and Indians both struggled offensively.

The only points scored in the second half were by Derby in the third quarter.

Brown and senior running back Brody Kooser both scored, Syring aided the later with an interception, and Derby had the 21-14 lead with 16 minutes left in the game.

Although junior quarterback Hunter Igo did not score any touchdowns, he still had 114 rushing yards and 141 passing.

Senior Javon Davis knocked down two critical passes, which kept the Indians from scoring and tying the game with two minutes left in the game.
