The Derby girls (7-1) walked away with a 60-41 win over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Wichita South (8-1) on Saturday at Koch Arena. These were the same Titans, who won four straight Class 6A titles and, last month, trampled over Wichita North 66-3.

Derby junior Tor’e Alford downed three straight three-pointers and couldn’t seem to miss a shot in the first half, leading the Panthers to a 36-11 lead at halftime.

“I think sometimes she’s (Alford) such an unselfish player… but I also told her, I said, ‘Tor’e you got to do you,’ and I think she’s starting to figure out how to do both of those things,” Derby coach Jodie Karsak said.

Alford scored 20 first-half points, while South scored 21 in three quarters.

“Tor’e, I don’t know what she had at half, but she came out fired up,” Karsak said.

Alford finished with 24 points, and junior Kennedy Brown had 18, as they combined to outscore South.

Derby’s biggest lead was 32 points.
