Derby cleans up at HOSA conference

Derby HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) competed at the 2018 Spring Leadership Conference at Pittsburg State University on Feb. 27-28.

Senior Averi Baker placed first in Veterinary Science, completing an online test and identifying lab equipment and companion species.

Seniors Paige Davis and Cyaira Pierce placed first in Health Career Display, where they created a poster about their selected health professional and presented it to judges.

Senior Paige Davis also placed first in Biomedical Laboratory Science with senior Emily Cleveland in second and senior Hannah Berk third. They took an online test, identified lab equipment and demonstrated the proper techniques for applying and removing personal protection equipment.

Baker and senior Kory Montoya got second place in Forensic Medicine. They individually took an online test, then determined cause, manner and time of death for a given case.

Montoya also received second place in Medical Spelling. She took an online test then participated in a spelling bee.

Sophomores Ethan Kardin, Sydney Engelking and Bridget Greb placed third in the Public Service Announcement competition with a PSA about pre-diabetes.

Senior Summer Reece received third in Extemporaneous Writing after writing a paper on a secret topic.

Students who placed are currently waiting to see if they meet qualifications for the national conference in Dallas Texas in June of this year.
