Students across the nation walked out on April 20 to remember those lives lost in the Columbine shooting 19 years ago and also protest gun violence.

Twenty-three Derby students walked out of second block for 17 minutes to symbolize the 17 lives lost at the Parkland shooting in Florida on Feb. 14.

“There has been too many school shootings throughout the nation, and there hasn’t been anything really done about it… so I was kind of just doing my part to protest the current way things are handled in Kansas,” sophomore Jordan Habash said.

During the protest, students walked out to the practice field and talked. Senior Ivy Icenhour thanked those who participated before the students walked inside with the administrators who had been outside

The students who walked out will receive an unexcused absence for being out of class for more than five consecutive minutes.
