On Saturday, several students from Derby High School traveled to Washburn Rural High School to compete in state.

To perform at state, a musician must have received a “1” rating at district regionals.

“We had to work pretty hard — we had to learn out music in a short amount of time because we had to be ready to perform many times even before state,” junior TJ Holt said, who performed with the Madrigal women in the choir.

Earning a “1” at state competition is not an easy task, as everyone in the state of Kansas is there from their district regional competition.

The following musicians received a “1” rating at state:

David Romo

Bradley Roudybush

Kate McCarthy
