Spring sports recap (April 30-May 5)

Softball had a very busy week, and now all spring sports head into their last two weeks of the regular season.

*Softball made up a postponed game at Campus on Monday, then had home games against Great Bend on Tuesday and Friday against Salina South.

Against the Campus Colts the Panthers swept both games 11-2, 9-3.

Against Great Bend, Derby lost the first game 10-1, but won the second 5-0.

Against the Salina South Cougars, the Panthers won 10-0, 8-0.

*Baseball made up a postponed game at Campus on Monday, winning the first game against the Colts 18-2, but losing the second 11-4.

At home on Friday against Salina South, the team honored 11 seniors: Jarrett Bowman, Alex Jacobs, Noah Johnson, Brett Leon, Drew Maddox, Alex McGill, Westow Murrow, Brayden Paxton, Beau Rodriguez, Blayten Tullis and Brett Westerman.

Against the Cougars the Panthers won the first game 4-0, losing the second 14-4.

*Girls soccer played at Salina Central on Monday and at home on Tuesday against Salina South for a benefit game dedicated to the Derby Family Community Service.

Against the Mustangs the Panthers won 8-0. Against Salina South, they won 2-0.

*Girls swim had their last home meet on Tuesday where the team finished first for the first time and celebrated four seniors: Jordan Cox, Ashlee Henwood, Megan Keil and Shayna Mitchell.

On Thursday the Panthers finished second at Salina South.

*Track had its only home meet of the season on Friday.

*Boys varsity tennis went to Salina on Monday for the AVCTL meet and then on Friday was at Wichita Southeast for 6A regionals.

Five players qualified for state, which is on Friday and Saturday: Jarrett Bowman, Daniel Dunn, Kyle Findley, Clayton Simmons and Brady Walls.

*Boys varsity golf had an invitational in Winfield on Thursday.
