Graduation: What to wear

Olivia Jones, Panther's Tale writer, designer

When the topic of graduation comes up, many of the seniors stress over what to wear during the event.

Knowing the rules for clothing will help make the process a little easier.

During the ceremony the only things worn with the cap and gown are the tassels, they should be worn on the right side of the cap. Academic honors awarded by the Derby High School Administration and/or NHS stoles may also be worn.

A corsage or boutonniere can be worn.

Don’t put an iron directly on your gown– it will melt.

Under the cap and gown, clothing should be along the lines of the following:

Females

Wear a dress with dress shoes. No flip flops.

Wear something that you’ll be comfortable sitting and walking in. Make sure your dress is more formal than what you wear every day. Add a little flare with some jewelry.

For your shoes wear something that compliments your dress. For the ladies wanting to wear heels, know that the administrators warn against them. You will be walking up steps and across the stage, so keep that in mind. If you choose heels, make sure they are comfortable ones.

Males

Wear a collared shirt, dress slacks — khaki pants are commonly worn, dress shoes and dark socks.

Don’t worry about overdressing. There’s no need to wear a suit and tie. If navigating Men’s Wearhouse is not your thing, there are plenty of other ways to look nice. If you choose to wear khaki pants and a collared shirt, include a tie or a nice belt. If you want to stand out a bit wear a bow tie to spice things up.

Do not bring purses, cameras or personal belongings with you. There will not be a secure place to store them.

When choosing your outfits, keep in mind that  sunglasses, shorts, tennis shoes, sandals, anything that violates the schools dress code or deemed inappropriate by administrators will not be allowed.
