Spring sports recap (May 14-19)

Postseason officially kicked off this week.

*Softball regionals were May 15 as the Panthers hosted three other teams: Topeka, Campus and Junction City. Derby beat Junction City 10-0 before facing Topeka. The Panthers beat the Trojans 3-1 to advance to the Class 6A tournament for the eighth straight year.

The Panthers (20-2) will face Olathe Northwest (16-6) on Thursday in Lawrence.

*Baseball regionals were Wednesday as the Panthers hosted three other teams: Topeka, Wichita West and Dodge City. Derby beat Topeka 12-2 then edged Wichita West 1-0 to qualify for state.

The Panthers (16-6) will face Olathe Northwest (15-7) on Thursday in Lawrence.

*Girls soccer first round regionals were May 15 as the Panthers (12-3-1) beat Wichita West (3-9-1) 10-0. The Panthers beat the Pioneers and faced Wichita North on May 17 in the regional finals. The Panthers won 4-1 to land a spot in the quarterfinals against Manhattan at home tonight.

*Girls swim state was Friday and Saturday in Topeka.

Megan Keil donned a graduation cap while winning some new medals on Saturday after taking first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free, beating her previous state record in the 50 last year.

*Track regionals were Friday in Lawrence.

The boys placed for state in the 3200 meter relay, Migc Aiyanyor and Tyler Brown qualified in the long jump, Evan Clark in discus and shot put. Brown also qualified in pole vault. Adrian Brown, who was the defending champ in the hurdles, was hurt.

The girls placed for state in the 1600 relays, Aneesa Abdul- Hameed in the 100 and 400 meters, Keil in the 800, and Callie Herschfield and Jadyn Young in javelin.

*Boys varsity golf regionals were Monday in Dodge City where three boys competed: Tre Cornwell, Jordan Renard and Luke Smith. Tre Cornwell qualified for state in Kansas City.
