After writing 11 albums, Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl”, on Oct. 5.

The release of the new album caused a lot of feedback to flood the internet

“I really liked the new album,” sophomore Maya Paichaud said. “I thought it was nice to get a new perspective from her, and all of the songs were so fun and upbeat.”

With the announcement of her engagement to her fiancé, Travis Kelce, fans were upset and said that her music wouldn’t be as good because they weren’t break-up songs. In response, Swift made her album reflect on the happiness she was experiencing in life.

“I think this album definitely shows that she’s happy and having fun,” Painchaud said. “All of her previous albums were kind of sad and heartbreaking, so finally getting an album that came from a place of joy was refreshing.”

Unlike Painchaud, many fans who listened to the album, like junior Hailey Maddox, had mixed feelings.

“I was a little disappointed with the lyrics, but I did still like it,” Maddox said. “I feel like she was trying to get more into the showgirl vibe, which is the point, but at the same time, it wasn’t her.”

A lot of the backlash came from her lyrics. 

“Her lyrics were definitely the worst part, but the actual melodies and effects in the songs were great,” Maddox said.

Using lyrics like “girlboss” and “savage” gave fans a negative opinion.

“She was using lingo that didn’t make sense for her age and generation,” sophomore Codie Whitener said.

A lot of controversy came when fans discovered that her song, “The Life of a Showgirl” sounded similar to her ex-boyfriend’s song, “Cool” by the Jonas Brothers. Swift credited other songs for inspiration on her album, but did not mention anything about the Jonas Brothers song.

“She was stealing songs from people,” Whitener said. “She pointed out that she used a reference from a song that didn’t even sound similar, but didn’t say anything about the song that sounds the exact same.”

The negative feedback left some fans angry.

“I think it’s a fun new twist based off her most recent eras,” Painchaud said. “I know all of those haters will be waiting in line for tickets to the next concert.”
