The Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals’ rights against unreasonable searches and seizures, was destroyed for people of color all over America after a Supreme Court ruling. 

In the Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem case, the Supreme Court passed it in a 6-3 ruling. This new ruling meant that Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE, would legally be allowed to pull people over and question them because they ‘look like an immigrant.’

“Immigration officers may briefly detain an individual for questioning if they have a reasonable suspicion, based on specific articulable facts, that the person being questioned is an alien illegally in the United States,” Secretary Kristi Noem said.

These ‘articulable facts’ could simply be the presence at a bus stop, speaking Spanish, or doing a stereotypical ‘immigrant’ job.

“I think it’s unreasonable what ICE is doing, and I think it’s just unfair in some situations because they are taking people away from their families without any motive, just because of their race,” sophomore Sarahy Uribe said.

This new ruling means that even legal immigrants may be detained just because of their looks. 

“To be honest, it kind of does scare me,” sophomore Gerardo Flores said. “My brother and I are the darkest ones in our family, so it makes it harder for us to seem legal here. I’m just scared that if I get deported when I’m legal, I’ll lose my friends and family.”

It is brought up, though, that America was built on immigrants. At least 13 founding fathers were immigrants.

“It is funny how quickly we forget our own American history,” counselor Joaquin Zapata said. “Most people are not Native to North America. Most people are descendants of immigrants.”

Even throughout the racial profiling, Mexicans still show off their pride.

“We should represent us, and exactly whats going on and ignore the haters, and what ICE thinks of us,” said sophomore Adilynn Limon, who celebrated Mexican independence day by wearing a Mexico soccer jersey to school.

Overall, immigrants continue to try and build a new life in America.

“America is a great country,” Zapata said. “It still is the land of opportunity for many. Families leave their homes behind to make a better life for themselves and their children. America today needs people who want to work and do jobs most Americans do not want to do.”
