The Panthers looked dominant in the win over Northwest. The offense, defense and special teams all contributed to putting points on the board.
The 63-21 win is the second largest margin to only the first round game against Topeka.
The Panthers struck first and never looked back, sending the team to its 11th straight sub-state game. The Panthers (8-3) will travel to Manhattan on Nov. 21.
Following an opening drive stop by the Derby defense, quarterback Blade Clark got the offense rolling with a 27-yard touchdown pass to junior Davon Morrison. The game stalled for some time before Clark ran it in for another six with 5:17 left in the first quarter.
Running back Arieus Finley kept the offense rolling with a 34-yard touchdown run to extend the Derby lead to 21. Finley finished the game with 194 yards on 15 carries, scoring twice.
Morrison kept his foot on the gas when he took back a kick return for six later in the half.
The defense fought all night holding the power house offense to just 14 points before the starters came out. The biggest play of the night for the Derby secondary was an 85-yard pick six from senior Krys Dorsey.
The score at halftime was 42-7, but that didn’t stop the Grizzlies from giving an effort in the start of the second half.
The Panther offense was held up in its first drive of the half followed by a Grizzlies score.
Northwest tried an onside kick, but failed to recover.
From there the Panthers kept adding to the lead, giving Northwest zero hope of a comeback.
