Bringing faith and fellowship, the Jesus Club is making its mark at DHS.

Formed this year by junior Sunnie Getchell, seniors Addy Greer, Ashlyn Zerger, Kayla Cooper and freshman Vivienne Peck, the Jesus Club is a Bible study group that meets before school on the first and last Monday of each month. 

It was created as a way to get those connected who couldn’t make it to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings on Monday nights.

“We wanted a more accessible option for those who don’t have rides, have work, or do sports,” Getchell said.

For some, this club is more than a school organization, it’s a lifeline. Having a place of hope might just be exactly what someone needs.

“I think it’s super important to have a space and a place to go to in the morning where people can feel like they belong,” Peck said.

School is a tricky place; you either feel like you belong or you don’t.

There is so much pressure to perform and perfect — just to play the part of every other student in the school. However, living through Christ is what the Jesus Club strives for.

“I have noticed a lot of the students growing in their faith and being more confident with bringing up God around our school,” Zerger said.

They have created an atmosphere where people can take a moment of breath and be relieved of all the worries of the world.

“Knowing that there are other people at school who believe in God has really helped me realize I have a community to go to when I need it,” Peck said.

With open discussion, scripture reading and prayer, the Jesus Club allows people to feel comforted and welcome in a place many find it hard to. 

“Every meeting we do some sort of guided scripture reading, usually a chapter or two of a certain book. We also always pray before and after reading,” Zerger said.
