Derby High School publications will not refrain from posting things such as swear words or hand signs, so long as it tells the story of the event. We won’t post something just because it has a swear word; however, if the journalist feels that it was part of the story, it is our job and responsibility to include every angle on the story. Kansas Student Publications Act, Section 3a, states, “material shall not be suppressed solely because it involves political or controversial subject material,” as well as Section 3d, which states, “Student editors of student publications are responsible for determining the news, opinion, and advertising content of such publications. Student publication advisers and other certified employees who supervise or direct the preparation of material for expression in student publications are responsible for teaching and encouraging free and responsible expression of material in high standards of English and journalism.” We, as a whole, believe that censoring or leaving out pictures strictly due to vulgar language would be inserting bias into our publications, something we have no intent of doing. Censoring signs could be seen as censoring the news, and as a publication, we want to tell the whole truth of the story, regardless of the language used or our personal beliefs. In regard to printing, we will choose the image that best represents the story, whether or not it uses controversial language. As far as PanthersTale, it would be discrediting our photographers to censor the images taken solely because of the language used by the protesters. We will not allow our journalists to write such language; however, since they were not the ones to write the signs, it does not reflect poorly on our staff and adviser. If the protest were on a different subject, we would cover it the same way. Our staff has been trained to cover the news ethically and factually, regardless of their personal beliefs. We don’t make this decision lightly; however, we feel it is our duty as journalists to inform the public of the entire situation.
