Senior year feels like a hammer hit you with a hint of sadness and a touch of reminiscence. It’s all coming to an end, and all you can do is let time pass while you look at it.
There are so many things that our 13th year entails, like Prom. Getting ready and doing hair is almost half of your day, all while you’re just waiting till you can leave to take pictures or do whatever you want.
As a senior, there are so many things going through our heads and so much to say goodbye to, including senior prank, senior celebration, and graduation.
What’s scary about being a senior is that you have so much freedom all at once; it can be fun, but it also means you’re now responsible for yourself, and making decisions is something that will come up more and more as we get closer to graduating.
In less than five short months, we will all be starting our own paths into this growing society. Some of us will choose a close college, and others won’t go to college at all.
While some of us are going through our last semesters, others have already graduated and are just waiting till they can cross the stage and officially say they accomplished high school.
But for the rest, the second semester is the time of the year that feels like a chore just doing one assignment. Plus we have the weight of the future on our shoulders, and nothing is stopping that.
It’s a little ironic – maybe it’s the assignments or having to sit in class for over an hour – but even though I don’t want it to end, I can’t wait to leave early.
I used to tell my older brothers that I couldn’t wait to grow up, and they always told me that I’d change how I thought about that, but I didn’t believe it until I realized my childhood was basically over.
Grasping all of this realization is a good reason as to why most seniors tend to slack off towards the end. The stress level is higher, others have more expectations, and it’s all crashing together, so why does the assignment in front of me even matter?
I think for some of us, the best way we can celebrate finishing the year is by having fun, which is also another factor in our switching our focus from school to other activities.
Sadly, after high school, we have more than one obligation, so doing assignments and celebrating school at the same time is something we’ll have to start getting used to.
Making and doing the most in school has definitely helped distract me from many things, including my phone and graduation. The schoolwork also benefits you more if you’re going to college or if you just want to feel accomplished.
I think the best way to commemorate this long lasting year is to stay included and take nothing for granted because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
