I never thought a simple card game shuffled on my best friend’s living room floor would start a weekly tradition I can’t imagine my life without.
Dutch Blitz is a group solitaire game where you try to get rid of as many cards as possible. Though the strategy is tough, I could never get tired of it.
Sophomore Codie Whitener, my best friend, was gifted Dutch Blitz for Christmas. On Jan. 2, we learned how to play it. From then on, we got her cousin, junior Emmersyn Bonebrake, into the game, which then started our tradition.
The Blueberry Blitzers, our friend group, meets every Friday to play. Though it seems like a cheesy way for three teenage girls to spend their Friday night, it quickly became my favorite part of the week.
To them, it may simply be a game night, but to me it’s so much more. My “just make it to Friday” was no longer wishing to get through the school week, but instead wishing to spend time with two of my best friends.
Card games have always been special to me. But Dutch Blitz isn’t just like any other card game.
Seeing Codie and Emmersyn weekly to play Dutch Blitz has made our bond so much stronger and also so much more competitive.
I’ve always played as blue, which I personally think is the best color. Codie, yellow, and Emmersyn, red. I’d like to think the colors we choose say a lot about us, but honestly, it’s just become a habit to play the same every time.
Families have game nights and friend groups have movie nights, but we have Blitz Fridays, which I wouldn’t change for the world.
