Senior Macayla Askew has stamped her name in the record books at Derby not just once but five times.
Not only has she passed these marks, but Askew sits in the Top 10 in Panthers’ history in points, rebounds, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. She broke the single-season record for steals with 80 and counting.
“The most important accolade to me is just the feeling of personal growth,” said Askew, who signed with Elon. “Learning new things about myself and our team and how we can eventually win state this year has been very important.”
Her success leads to other players being able to get their own statistics as well.
“She is a key part of our team chemistry and helps our team get into the flow of things, whether it’s her rebounding, getting steals or even just flat out scoring,” junior guard Aysia Fox said.
Askew has helped her team on the defensive end.
“Macayla’s play style has helped me improve and grow as a defender, which leads to easy layups,” Fox said. “It truly is a blessing to play with her, and I am so happy she got her recognition with all her stats.”
Askew’s dominance has brought the attention of opponents, who often double- and triple-team her.
“It’s so rewarding to see my efforts recognized among supporters,” Askew said. “They serve as more motivation to keep moving forward.”
Assistant coach Ashton Petrisor added: “Macayla’s one of many players on our team that can score, rebound, play defense and also make her teammates better overall. Her ability to do all these things always puts us in a great position to be successful and win games.”
In the process of securing these accolades, Askew hasn’t lost her main focus.
“Team success has been my top priority all season,” Askew said. “Focusing on the team involves collective goals and working together.”
