The graduation requirements for the class of 2028 and beyond can seem overwhelming to figure out, but they are actually a lot simpler than they seem.

Students now need 3 1/2 credits in English, as well as a speech class or the Journalism and Media Communications class. 

Some options include Speech, Debate, Audio/Video Production, Graphic Design, 3D Animation, Forensic Speech, Yearbook or Newspaper.

Three science and three math classes are still required, along with one additional credit in science or math, and these are now recognized as STEM credits.

Four Individual Plan of Study (IPS) credits are expected to go with the students’ chosen pathway. For example, if you are in the nursing pathway, you are expected to take biomedical classes.

“I think that the new requirements give us more opportunities to learn more about pathways we could potentially go into,” sophomore Reagan Perry said. “It shows people more about what classes are available and that they have a lot of options.”

A common worry among these new requirements is that it means fewer electives, but this does not cut out the chances for electives.

“I think the fact that they are requiring a speech or journalism class instead of another English class is probably going to upset some people, but I think it’s pretty necessary since many people in high school have social anxiety, so it could help them,” junior Lailah Autrey said.
