Page 2: Snow, ice wreak havoc

The record-breaking low temperatures across the United States have presented many difficulties.

Burst pipes, power outages and school cancellations are just a few of the inconveniences as a result of the sub-freezing weather.

In Wichita, the temperature stayed below freezing for the entire week of Feb. 7, breaking a record for cold weather in the month of February.

On Feb. 14, the temperature high was 4 degrees — breaking a record for Valentine’s Day in Wichita.

On Feb. 16, the windchill was reported at -30 degrees.

Especially unprepared for the cold snap, Texas is one of the most deeply affected states. Millions of people didn’t have power or water, and there were multiple deaths from cold exposure.

Derby residents had pipes freeze and then burst, and the rolling outages resulted in some people losing power for hours.

Pipes burst at Wineteer Elementary School, so it had remote learning on Feb. 18. All Derby public schools had remote learning on Feb. 17.

There was some good in all this cold — all Derby public schools had a snow day on Feb. 16.

“I went outside. I broke some ice in my creek, sledded down our hill, and almost broke my face on a canoe,” freshman Max Ross said.

“Solving a 4×4 Rubik’s cube,” freshman Jesse Whiteside said.

“Relaxing in bed, catching up on shows,” sophomore Emma Tiffany said.
