Stop light eases, increases traffic issues

The traffic lights at the new entrance on Rock Road have overwhelmingly annoyed the students.

The purpose of the lights is to make traffic smoother and safer as students, teachers and parents leave the parking lot.

While the new lights may be beneficial in easing outgoing traffic to Madison or James, they cause a lot of problems on Rock Road — especially before and after school when Derby’s traffic is at its highest.

“The new traffic light is useful after school, but during the day it backs up traffic and you have to sit there for a while,” junior Lauryn Jones said.

“It definitely slows down everything on Rock Road, but it makes everything way easier to get out of the high school,” junior Conley Hamblin said.

The city of Derby released a statement on Sept. 21 to clarify the reason for the new addition.

“The purpose was to improve traffic flow on Rock Road, and we still believe that will occur. Just not yet. Unfortunately we have some glitches and we need more time. We know a red light for no apparent reason can be frustrating, and we apologize for the situation. The traffic engineer and signal manufacturer are working to fix the glitches.”

The city stated that the situation will improve in several more weeks.
