Panthers upend Dodge City to advance to second round of 6A playoffs

The Derby Panthers (8-1) dominated the Dodge City Red Demons (3-6) 49-13 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Friday. .

The fifth-seeded Panthers travel to Manhattan (8-1) on Nov. 3 in the second round of the playoffs.

The fourth-seeded Indians beat No. 13 seed Wichita East (3-6) 21-0 at home.

The first quarter started out slowly, as the Panthers took a 7-0. But by halftime, they had a 28-16 lead.

Senior running back Brody Kooser had three rushing touchdowns all before halftime, racking up 192 yards for the game.

Junior quarterback Hunter Igo also had three rushing touchdowns, twice in the third quarter, and had 77 rushing yards and 128 passing yards.

Sophomore running back Tre Washington scored the last touchdown for the Panthers early in the fourth quarter with help from freshman quarterback Lem Wash, who came in late in the third.

The Red Demons returned a punt for a touchdown at 10:50 in the second quarter, but didn’t score again until eight minutes remained in the game.

Etc. —  Senior wide receiver Tyler Brown had 70 receiving yards.
